Meet Terry
Terry is enjoying his retirement here at The Henry with his lovely wife Grace. He enjoys the company of other residents and loves participating in social activities at the Clubhouse, especially playing cards. Terry is enjoying a well-deserved rest from all his hard work and accomplishments leading up to today.
Terry was born in New Zealand and moved to Australia when he was five years of age. He became a high school teacher and taught Geography, English and Bookkeeping. Terry then went on to complete his Master of Art at Sydney eventually becoming the Foundation Principal Lecturer, Applied Geography, 1969-1989 at the Canberra College of Advanced Education (now University of Canberra).
Terry is a very proud Australian who was awarded an Order of Australia (OAM) in 2019 for volunteer service as former Chairman of the Lifeline Canberra Board of Management and work with Canberra’s homeless.
Amongst his many academic achievements, Terry has also written and published two books: “Charles Robert Scrivener : The Surveyor Who Sited Australia’s National Capital Twice” a well-illustrated biography, celebrating the achievements of ‘Charley’ Scrivener 1855-1923 – drawing upon his official reports, maps and family letters. An insight into the suburban expansion of Victorian-era Sydney, rural closer settlement of the Riverina, and the choice of Australia’s national capital.
Terry’s second book was, “Driven; Francis Edwin Birtles“. A relative of Terry’s, Francis, was an Australian adventurer, cinematographer, and writer who in the early 20th century both cycled and drove across the continent. In 1928, Birtles became the first person to drive from London to Melbourne, a nine month part-solo journey completed in ‘The Sundowner’ which is preserved in the National Museum of Australia here in Canberra.
We wish Terry good health with great people by his side!
